Bishop Wenski to Candidates: Speak Truth on Immigration, The Sentinel, Jan 28, 2008

Testimony of Most Reverend Thomas G. Wenski
Bishop of Orlando, Florida before The House Subcommittee on Immigration, Citizenship, Refugees, Border Security, and International Law on Comprehensive Immigration Reform
May 22, 2007.

In June 2004, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Migration and The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, INC. (CLINIC) Board of Directors resolved to make comprehensive immigration reform, with special emphasis on legalization, a major public policy priority within the Church. Many other national Catholic institutions have also made legalization a policy priority.  Subsequently, they initiated the Justice for Immigrants campaign and invited other national Catholic organization to join.

In May 2005, the Irish Apostolate USA joined the Justice for Immigrants Campaign as a Core Member.  Since that time the IAUSA Administrator has represented the Irish Apostolate at JFI meetings, emailed Alerts to the Irish Immigration Pastoral Centers to take action on pending legislation, and participated in advocacy efforts with other JFI organizations with Members of Congress.  The IAUSA Board and Chaplains, along with staff and volunteers from the IIPCs, have called and emailed their Senators and House Representatives advocating for immigration reform that would include a path to legalization for the undocumented.

The Justice for Immigrants website is designed to provide education on the Catholic Church’s teaching and important relevant information on immigration in the United States, while providing the means to involve the public in its advocacy efforts.

Immigrants are a drain on the U.S. economy
Immigrants don’t want to learn English or become Americans
Today’s immigrants are different than those of 100 years ago
Most immigrants cross the border illegally
Weak U.S. border enforcement has lead to high undocumented immigration
The war on terrorism can be won through immigration restrictions
