New J Visa Program Announced - Sept 2008

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Micheál Martin TD, signed a major agreement this week with the US Government that will allow Irish citizens to work and travel in the US for up to 12 months. Information and the press release announcing the program is available on the Department of Foreign Affairs website
The agreement contains the following key elements:

  1. The US Government will make available up to 20,000 visas for Irish citizens, which will permit them to work and travel in the US for a period of 12 months
  2. The Irish Government will make available up to 5,000 work authorizations for US citizens, which will permit them to work in Ireland on the same basis  
  3. Both US and Irish citizens will be free to secure employment on arrival in each country;

In order to qualify for the program participants should be either in post-secondary education or have recently graduated. The current J-1 exchange program which permits students from the US and Ireland to work and travel during the summer months will continue to operate as usual.

Information on how to apply and the documentation required will be available soon. Applications from US citizens wishing to travel to Ireland will be accepted by the Irish Embassy in Washington and the Consulates in Boston, Chicago, New York and San Francisco.

Ireland is a parliamentary democracy. The National Parliament (Oireachtas) consists of the President and two Houses: Dáil Éireann (the House of Representatives) and Seanad Éireann (the Senate) whose powers and functions derive from the Constitution of Ireland enacted by the People on 1 July 1937. Each House of the Oireachtas has power under its Standing Orders to form Committees for specific purposes. There are four types of committees: Standing, Select, Joint and Special.

Crosscare Migrant Project (formerly Emigrant Advice) is an information, advocacy and referral organisation for vulnerable migrants. National Library of Ireland
The National Library of Ireland is a cultural institution under the aegis of the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism. Its mission is to collect, preserve and make available books, manuscripts and illustrative material of Irish interest.  The National Library is open, free of charge, to all that want and need to use it. A Reader’s Ticket is necessary in order to consult most categories of material.  

The Library does not lend books and reading is done in the various reading rooms. There is also a copying service and it is possible to get photocopies, photographs, slides, or microfilm of most items in the collections. The Library has an ongoing programme of exhibitions.
